Haldia LNG FSRU Project: SMPK Signs ₹260 Crore Deal for LNG Facility

Haldia LNG FSRU Project at Haldia Dock Complex

The Haldia LNG FSRU Project has received a major push with a new agreement signed at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata. The port authority has signed a license agreement with East Horizon Pvt Ltd to establish an LNG floating storage and regasification facility at Haldia Dock Complex.

The agreement was signed on March 6, 2026. The project involves an estimated investment of ₹260 crore. This development is expected to strengthen liquefied natural gas infrastructure in eastern India.

The Haldia LNG FSRU Project will support the growing demand for natural gas in the region. It will also help improve the country’s LNG import and distribution capabilities.

LNG Terminal Planned at Haldia Dock Complex

The proposed facility will include a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at the Haldia Dock Complex. The FSRU will handle the import, storage, and regasification of liquefied natural gas.

LNG will arrive at the facility through specialized LNG carriers. The FSRU will store the LNG and convert it back into natural gas before sending it into the pipeline network.

The Haldia LNG FSRU Project is expected to enhance the port’s ability to handle LNG cargo. It will also help develop LNG-based energy infrastructure in eastern India.

Currently, LNG infrastructure is more developed in western India. Projects like the Haldia LNG FSRU Project aim to balance regional energy supply and improve gas availability in the eastern part of the country.

LNG FSRU Project to Boost Gas Infrastructure

India is increasing the share of natural gas in its energy mix. The government aims to raise the share of natural gas to 15% of the total energy mix in the coming years.

The Haldia LNG FSRU Project will play an important role in achieving this goal. LNG infrastructure expansion is essential to ensure reliable supply to industries, power plants, and city gas distribution networks.

The project will also help improve energy security. A stronger LNG import infrastructure allows the country to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on traditional fuels.

The availability of regasified LNG can also support sectors such as fertilizer, petrochemicals, and heavy industries that require a stable supply of natural gas.

Project to Support India’s Gas-Based Economy

The Haldia LNG FSRU Project will support industrial growth in eastern India. Reliable access to natural gas can attract investments in energy-intensive industries.

The project also aligns with the government’s port-led industrialisation strategy. Major ports are being developed as energy and industrial hubs.

The Haldia Dock Complex already plays a key role in handling bulk cargo and petroleum products. The addition of LNG infrastructure will further expand its capabilities.

Improved gas availability can also support city gas distribution networks in nearby states. This will help increase the use of cleaner fuels in industries, transport, and households.

SMPK Highlights Importance of LNG Development

According to Rathendra Raman, chairman of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, the project marks an important milestone for LNG infrastructure development in eastern India.

He said the  LNG FSRU Project will strengthen the port’s role in supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner fuels. The facility will also help improve the national gas supply chain.

The chairman added that the project will promote sustainable industrial growth in the region.

With increasing energy demand and a strong push toward cleaner fuels, projects like the LNG FSRU Project are expected to play a key role in India’s evolving energy landscape.
