Indian LNG Carrier Disha Crosses Strait of Hormuz Safely

Indian LNG Carrier Disha crossing the Strait of Hormuz with LNG cargo bound for Dahej, Gujarat.

India achieved a major milestone in energy shipping as the Indian LNG Carrier Disha safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel is the first Indian LNG tanker to use the strategic route since the recent Middle East conflict began.

Indian LNG Carrier Disha Carries LNG to Dahej

The Indian LNG Carrier Disha is carrying 62,370 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG). A Shipping Corporation of India-led consortium manages the vessel. Petronet LNG Ltd has chartered the tanker for the cargo delivery.

The vessel is also among the first commercial ships to cross the Strait after the United States and Iran announced a preliminary ceasefire.

The tanker is expected to reach Dahej, Gujarat, on June 18.

Safe Transit Through the Strait of Hormuz

Upesh Kumar Sharma, Director in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said that 15 vessels have safely crossed the strategic waterway. The fleet includes 10 Indian-flagged ships and five foreign-flagged vessels.

The ministry continues to monitor the situation closely. The Directorate General of Shipping works with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, shipping companies, and other stakeholders to protect Indian seafarers and vessels.

Indian LNG Carrier Disha Strengthens Energy Security

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes. A large share of global oil and LNG trade passes through this narrow waterway.

Military action in the Middle East disrupted shipping in the region. The conflict raised concerns about the safety of commercial vessels and energy supplies.

The successful journey of the Indian LNG Carrier is a positive sign for global trade. It supports India’s LNG imports and reduces concerns over supply disruptions.

Industry experts believe the return of commercial shipping through the Strait could improve market confidence and strengthen energy security for India and other major LNG-importing countries.
